I hadn’t heard of The Door until it was nominated for Best Short Film (Live Action) at this years Oscars, but it’s easy to see from early on in the opening scenes just why this film is so highly regarded.
Written and Directed by young Irish filmmaker Juanita Wilson, this fragmented tale of a family dealing with the loss of a young child after the Chernobyl tragedy, is equal parts haunting and mesmerizing.
The Door is a universal symbol of life, of death, of entering the next life. It has many associations inherent in it, both positive and negative. It can mean an opportunity gained or an opportunity lost: As one door opens, another one closes…
