A Conversation with Jack Thorne

When people knew I was talking to a writer who lives in Luton and has written for Shameless and Skins they assumed he moved here for material, but Jack Thorne, an acclaimed writer for TV, theatre, radio and now film had a different motive.
“Price, sorry. I wanted somewhere where I wasn’t working in my bedroom [...]

SotW: Echoes

There’s something perverse about the fact that my SotW pick of abused, sex trafficked women, happened to be posted on the universal day of love, but perhaps it’ll make you hold that special someone all the tighter. Despite the grim subject, director Rob Brown shows that compassion can be found where you least expect it.

Big Art, Little Debt

Was a time when the filmmaker’s strategy began with the gamble of maxed out credit cards and (hopefully) ended with the win of an acquisition bidding war at Sundance or the like. However, with the number of festival film buys shrinking and the cash amounts garnered by the lucky few doing likewise, what’s a filmmaker [...]

It particularly warms my heart to see my top film of 2007 Zoo in there, along with past (print) DN interviewee Ondi Timoner’s [...]

Yes to nofilmschool

I’m sure I wasn’t the only one saddened at the announcement that Ryan Bilsborrow-Koo and Zachary Lieberman vehicle, The West Side was going on hiatus, perversely due to Ryan and Zac’s success with the series. Well things have been a little quiet since then and whilst I had no doubt our past guests were [...]

Sight and Sound’s best online videos of 2009

I think it’s all too obvious by now, that here at Directors Notes we bloody love a list! Well Sight and Sound love to pander to our needs, they’ve already given us their Films of 2009 and DVDs of 2009 lists and have now treated us to the Best Online Videos of 2009 and accompanying [...]

SotW: I Met the Walrus

It’s that time again and my first pick for Short of the Week in 2010 is Josh Raskin’s innovative animated documentary I Met the Walrus.
Based around a spontaneous interview with John Lennon over 40 years ago, Raskin weaves together tradition pen sketches with contemporary digital illustration, to create a unique and exhilarating short film.
