When I featured Jesper Eriksson’s dark short Between Beasts on the site last week, I thought the film might amass a fair bit of interest surrounding its strong visuals and haunting, captivating plot, along with its reminiscent tones to popular video game Limbo. However, I certainly wasn’t expecting the shadowy animation to garner a whole new level of attention when it revealed itself to actually be a case study on internet bullying.

Choosing the medium of online video because he felt it to be ”probably the most appealing way of spreading information over the web“, Eriksson purposefully designed Between Beasts to echo the visuals of Limbo in an attempt to provoke a community where he felt his “project would have a large chance of gaining attention”. Releasing the film online with the sole purpose of it being an experiment in reaction, it eventually turned out not to be the references to Playdead’s ghostly game that would direct a flurry of hate in his direction, but instead an association to Warcraft the director had inserted into his short. Intentionally designed to resemble a worgen character from the game world of warcraft, it was the werewolf character that would eventually act as a catalyst for the online intimidation to begin:

“people like this are the lowest of the low”

“Good job using a Worgen model for the Werewolf, VERY creative. [/sarcasm]“

“You sir, are full of shit. That’s the same model and the same animations.”

“He stole the werewolf and didn’t have the skill to make the girl match it.”

Just a few of the comments I was able to discover online after a quick search.

“The spreading force of the crowd became overwhelming and the creativity of people trying to destroy for me was perplexing. But the experiment had the desired effect and I’m left with statistics supporting my theory for my work.”

“As my execution shows once the crowd has started pinpointing something out and gather up it’s starting to get out of control. During one day I received intimidating threats in email and comments, people followed me on my social networks and started spreading harsh material. In 24 hours I had received a crowd that would do anything in their power to ruin everything in my life, from the contacts I had to the interviewees of my work. My phone kept vibrating from spam emails and my inboxes got crowded. Apparently I had a 20 page hate thread on a forum where people gathered up to trash talk about my work and me. They wished me dead and expelled from school and society; I was called the lowest scum of the earth and several more comments I’m not including here (I am not publishing images here for the respect of the participants’ anonymity). This flag of hatred came from a single model in a short little video, which soon propelled into an inferno where the crowd jumped conclusions and nobody even laid notice to the short film in itself anymore. As I’m displaying in the film and the official poster by showing a Rorschach image, people will see what they want to see. When the crowd goes furious it creates self-fulfilling prophecies and soon everything is wrong with the subject. This is how bullying works, where the crowd jumps conclusions and pursues to find errors of the subject. In the case with Internet though, it grows faster and harsher than ever before in the real world.” [sic]

In creating such a detailed and captivating animation for his experiment, Erikson has not only unveiled a novel and effective method for supporting a just cause, but his dedication and commitment to the project shows the lengths he is prepared to go to get results. Between Beasts had already grabbed our attention with its striking aesthetics and fable-esque plot, but now with it being the first ever short to address internet bullying by experimenting on its viewers – it’s now bound to reside in our memory for a long time to come.

I’m guessing that much of the lineup will be familiar to DN regulars but it’s also likely that there are one or two which may have slipped past you. Either way, we’re massively grateful to all the fine filmmakers who were kind enough to let us play their films out and about. We promise that the first round’s ours at the festival bar!

Speaking of which, if any of you happen to be heading to Reading this weekend we’ll be there as usual so feel free to drop us a tweet – @WeAreDN, @MarBelle or @kung_fuelvis, and be sure to take note of the screening times at both venues by clicking the posters above.

I’m sure that the trailer has you all wishing you could be there too, but don’t fret, we’ve put together a virtual screening of the films for you below – Cider and campfires are your own responsibility. Enjoy!

I suspect this news may well be met with cries of “About bloody time!” and “What do you mean you didn’t have one?”, which is a fair point – many thanks to Content + Community Manager Sam Morrill for the nudge.

As you may have noticed, a massive percentage of the films we feature here each day live over on Vimeo and our new channel vimeo.com/channels/wearedn will make it easy for you to catch up with the films that are impressing us; especially if you kick back, throw the WeAreDN Channel into Couch Mode and watch in lean back comfort. Think of it as a continually updated, DN curated festival.

So far there are 610 hand picked DN films for your viewing pleasure so jump over to subscribe and feel free to suggest future films or let us know your thoughts by leaving a message on our Shoutbox.

As usual it was pretty easy for El Vez and I to pick our favourites from the last year, unfortunately cutting that list down to a realistic length for three nights of screenings was much more of a challenge. As always there’s a healthy mix of styles and genres and I’d like to thank all the filmmakers for their generosity. I plan to buy each and everyone of them a beer this weekend whether they make it or not – I’m happy to drink in your honour guys!

Speaking of which, team DN will be at Reading all weekend so drop us a tweet – @WeAreDN, @MarBelle or @kung_fuelvis – if you’d like to say hello or let us know what you think of the selection – you can click on the posters for timings.

For those of you not packing wellies at the moment, turn up your speakers and watch the trailer for the screening; you can also catch all of the shorts by following the links below.

Often employing balletically choreographed long takes coupled with natural performances, their 35mm cinemascope shorts are works of true beauty, laying bare the human condition.

Molloy and Lawlor will be present along the tour for Q&A sessions, but if you want to swot up on their process so you can ask the clever questions, take a listen to our interview with them for their feature film debut Helen.

I know I’m risking retribution from El Vez by beating him to the punch on this one, but news this good can’t wait around. You may have been aware of murmurings that South-Korean director Park Chan-wook had shot a 30 minute fantasy film on an iPhone 4. Despite his unquestionable filmmaking skill you may have been dubious and written it off as a gimmick. Well now you can alleviate your fears by taking a look at the trailer, which alone does far from walk you through the plot, so here’s the synopsis:

A fantastical tale that begins with a middle-aged man fishing one afternoon and then, hours later at night, catches the body of a woman. The panicked man tries to undo the intertwined fishing line, but he gets more and more entangled. He faints, then wakes up to find himself in the white clothes that the woman was wearing. The movie’s point of view then shifts to the woman and it becomes a tale of life and death from a traditional Korean point of view.

Whilst this is another example of the democratising power of technology for filmmakers, be aware that alongside his years of experience and considerable talent as a director, Park was financed to the tune of $130,000 by cellular carrier KT and as the behind the scenes film demonstrates used a whole host of kit to augment to iPhone’s capabilities. Still, it is mightly cool to think he used the same camera you film your cat videos with.

Solace is a non-narrative piece that captures fragments in the daily lives of a group of East London teenagers, exploring friendship, mortality and human interaction. Through a series of monologues, Solace reveals moments of warmth, teenage isolation and the transition from adolescence into adulthood. The originally composed score pulses and glides through the film, revealing the nuances of the teenagers’ lives; moments of joy, bravado, aggression and vulnerability. These sequences demonstrate the warmth between friends, while exploring the sharp exchanges and crueller nature of teenage life. Directed in a non-conventional style, Solace blurs the line between fiction, documentary and art.

You can catch Solace at London’s ICA, 12-14 Jan.

You could apply for film school, but the competition’s tough to even get through the door and once you’re there you’ll have to sell a kidney to cover tuition. If only there was some way for you to tap into the best and brightest of the active filmmaking community and save all your cash for the budget of your break out hit.

Well God bless Vimeo, who have been secretly working away over the past year or so on the Vimeo Video School. At launch they’ve got a boat load of tutorials covering areas such as DSLR, Editing, Lighting and Sound, with the promise of much more to come. Several of the tutorials also lay down the gauntlet by challenging you to put what you’ve just learnt into practice by signing up to a Lesson Challenge. If you fancy yourself a seasoned veteran of the filmmaking arts or know of some good tutorials then you can pay it forward by submitting them to the User Made Tutorials group.

We’ve said before that Vimeo felt like the obvious home of filmmakers online, but with introduction of the Vimeo Video School they’re taking filmmakers along the entire creative journey.

All we (or anybody else) seem to be banging on about these days is crowd funding and how it’s the filmmaking wave of the <del datetime="2010-12-06T14:31:43+00:00">future</del> now.

Whilst there are new funding sites popping up all the time, the popular choice for filmmakers lies between Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Both sites are fairly similar in their approach; describe your project, set a target amount and time frame, and provided backer incentives for different funding levels – but with one major difference:

Kickstarter – Reach your target in the timescale the money’s yours, fail and it’s returned to the backers.
Indiegogo – Whatever’s in the pot when the deadline passes is yours, whether you’ve met the target or not.

Depending on your outlook the potential partial funding of Indiegogo is either a ‘hooray we’ve got some money!’ good thing or a ‘shit we’re only partially funded, how the hell do we deliver this?’ bad thing, but as you have the Kickstarter fully funded option that isn’t really an issue…unless of course you live outside of the US, due to Amazon Payments’ US bank account restriction.

Well for us UK folks wanting to get into the crowd fully funded model comes Sponsume Crowdfunding. In their own words:

Do you have a great idea for an arts, social, business, charity project or product that needs kick-starting? Get it funded on Sponsume!

Sponsume Crowdfunding works pretty much as you’d expect, think of it as a Kickstarter for this side of the pond. If you’re still a little confused they’ve put together a quick video, complete with an ultra British voice over that explains all.

Even with talent and determination it can often be an uphill slog so you can never have too many resources to help you on your way. With this in mind bachelorsdegree.org have collated the 60 Best Blogs for Aspiring Screenwriters. As they say:

The internet, per usual, delivers on this front with a cascade of reading material poking and prodding every nook and cranny of the cinematic arts. While this list is by no means comprehensive — nor does it dismiss the contributions of other resources out there — it does provide a hopefully valuable and diverse starting point for anyone hoping to see their stories get told.

Now, don’t let DN’s inclusion in the Filmmaking section (thanks!) put you off, there are a ton of useful links here for you to check out.

From October 28th to 31st October, independent horror films come to Manchester to have their UK debut at the second Grimm Up North film festival. DN caught up with lovely festival director Simeon Halligan and had a history lesson. Last year Simeon was promoting his directorial feature length debut, low budget shocker Splintered and wanted it to premiere in Manchester, so Halloween seemed an appropriate time. He then got in touch with various filmmaker friends and contacts to see if they had any films to show too. One thing led to another and the festival was born.

Since then, film-making has taken a backseat as his time has been taken up with organising this year’s festival and looking at the films on offer, it’s been time well spent. Opening the festival is the Vincent Price classic Last Man on Earth, the original movie adaptation of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend novel.

This is followed by Outcast, an interesting looking psychological horror from Ireland starring James Nesbitt.

Other recommendations from Halligan included:

Dream Home, a Hong Kong film about a woman who will do ‘anything’ to get that much sought after property and judging by the clip we were shown, she goes further than gazumping.

Chop, an American black comedy that puts a twist on the torture porn genre.

Amer, more art-house than horror with a nod to Argento, in evidence on the fantastic poster.

Evil: In the Time of Heroes, a Greek zombie horror comedy with half the action taking place in Ancient Greece. Frankly this film looks absolutely nuts.

Bedevilled, a promising looking Korean revenge tale.

Halligan and the rest of the festival organisers are also particularly excited to present Brit teens in peril horror 13hrs and will have members of its cast and crew for a Q&A session afterwards.

Other films on the line-up that DN’s looking forward to are:

We Are What We Are (Mexican cannibal family drama – god, those four words look great next to each other!)

If you’re a regular here you’ll no doubt recognise some of the films and kick ass directors in our thank you list below, but even you loyal folks should find a few new gems to check out amongst the past favourites.

If you’re at Reading or Leeds this weekend click on the posters for timings and be sure to shout @kung_fuelvis or @MarBelle on twitter if a desire to drink beer and chat films catches you (we’ll be at Reading as usual).

I’ve started to feel bad about flaunting such a great programme of films in front of our non-UK, non-festival going friends, so just for you, here’s a trailer for this year’s screening. Enjoy and let us know your favourite films in the comments.

Award winning short filmmaker Alex Barrett, cinephile and sometime DN contributor is nearing production on his debut feature Life Just Is.

His cast has just been announced and it’s a belter, including Paul Nicholls and Jayne Wisener who played Johanna in the Burton/Depp Sweeney Todd.

Presumably they’ve been drawn in by the calibre of the script, which concerns a group of twenty-somethings asking the questions we all ask. From a familiar idea Barrett has created a script to his strengths which include a rare depth of character and ability to create rewarding interaction. It’s an exciting project.

Not least because it is being created in the most modern of ways. Barrett is just doing it. He has hosted excellent regular screening and networking nights in London to spread the word of what he and likeminded souls are doing, build a community of collaborators. In helping to promote the work of other filmmakers he has ensured reciprocation when Life Just Is is ready to be rolled out.

He is seeking funding and involvement through excellent blogs and networking, visiting festivals and showing a love for cinema that is infectious.

To know more, to be involved, or to watch it all unfold it’s all here or follow Alex on Twitter @albaztks

The fine folks over at Vimeo have decided it’s time to officially support the remix, resample and reimagination culture that goes hand in hand with filmmaking by allowing users to tag their uploads with one of several Creative Commons licenses. From the blog post:

Sharing videos on Vimeo has always gone beyond passively viewing the clips our fellow Vimeans upload. Many of us have given permission for others to take what we’ve done and screen it at events or chop it up and make something completely new. For a long time, we have wanted to make these kinds of permissions easier to grant, and we’re pleased to announce that after working together with the fine folks over at Creative Commons, we’ve done just that!

Today we are launching a new Settings option that allows you to add one of several Creative Commons licenses to your videos.

We’ve long considered Vimeo the hub of filmmaking, so it’s good to see them doing their bit to embrace remix/mashup culture as a valid form of filmmaking. I can see this perfectly folding into their weekend challenges.

It’s become increasingly apparent that filmmakers need to look, not to the ever conservative and risk adverse Hollywood machine for the funding of their projects, but to the fans of film and the numerous crowd sourcing options which have sprung up in recent years to connect makers with consumers. Whether this will eventually become the norm is not the question in my mind, but rather, why aren’t more of you doing it right now?

Seems the team behind the first two documentaries on everyone’s favourite weather reporting, cult director David Lynch thought that was the way to go too for their third and final installment, LYNCHthree. From the site:

As truly independent filmmakers, we know first-hand that raising money is always a challenge, so we’ve decided to fund this documentary through an innovative crowdfunding campaign…David has created a cool limited edition self-portrait exclusively for this project. If you donate $50 towards the production of the film through this website, you will become a member of the LYNCHthree project, gain access to exclusive footage and receive your choice of either a limited edition collectible print, t-shirt or tote bag.

I can think of few better ways to drop 50 bucks. Hmm, would a donation of £150 get you the set…?

Spanning seven countries, it promises to deliver a mix of proven big names alongside the next generation of up and comers, with The Creators Project site acting as a showcase hub for the multi-year project.

Time is short, so if you had to boil all the film podcasts vying for your attention down to a perfect 10, then the 10 Podcasts Worth a Listen list in the Spring issue of Moviemaker Magazine is where I’d start.

Now aside from the fact that Directors Notes has made the cut (yea us!), I can honestly say it’s a quality selection, including the likes of /Filmcast, Filmspotting and Creative Screenwriting.

One slight clarification though for those of you who were inspired to visit following the piece:

“What makes this podcast unique is that while one episode may feature an interview with a moviemaker, another could feature clips from the film being discussed, so the audience won’t be in the dark if they haven’t seen the film in question.”

Pretty much ever interview we’ve run on DN, outside of festivals coverage, is proceeded by clips or full films so you always have a frame of reference for the conversation.

And after he joined me for an impromptu sidewalk interview, equally impressed by the man himself. So I’m more than happy to throw a little DN support behind the TUB DVD release. Here’s the deal:

Bobby has set up a kickstarter page where, until the 6th June, you can pre-order the signed DVD or a signed DVD + poster combo and contribute to the $2000 goal that will see TUB joining video collections worldwide. The film alone is worth your hard earned but it’s chock-full of extras that make this a no brainer purchase!

If you have a love for animation as great as ours, then you too probably have a list of favourite studios which consistently bang out top notch work. Well, looks like the time has come to add another name to the group with the formation of Beakus.

Besides the work already featured on their site, you can tell straight off that it’s a studio to expect grand things of from the pedigree of its main players: Steve Smith (founder of Trunk Animation), Leigh Hodgkinson (formerly of Slinky), Matthias Hoegg, and Argentinean collective Bluna.

We’re looking forward to seeing what Beakus hit us with in the future, but for now check out their reel:

I’ve long known about the Portable Film Festival and have regularly scoured the works it presents for films to feature on DN, but never really gave much thought to what or who may lie beneath. Well obviously I should have, because the new look Portable.tv site is a mighty fine thing to behold. And frankly, any site that aims “to bring you sugar coated candy in the form of video, fashion, reviews and more,” and looks this good is likely to win me over.
