Developed from the most personal of life experiences, Borderline Films’ Josh Mond’s debut feature James White is a deeply emotional examination of the love shared between a mother and her wayward son who struggles to take control of his reckless, self-destructive behaviour whilst in the midst of a momentous family challenge. DN sat down with Mond at the London Film Festival to discuss the inner workings of the Borderline Films’ partnership and how he went about constructing a visual language that would trap an audience inside the claustrophobic internal turmoil of his central character.

James White (2015)

James White is a troubled twenty-something trying to stay afloat in a frenzied New York City. He retreats further into a self-destructive, hedonistic lifestyle, but as his mother battles a serious illness James is forced to take control of his life. As the pressure on him mounts, James must find new reserves of strength or risk imploding completely.

That was the best thing for us, to experience a failure.
