In amongst all the psychological horror of Black Swan did you like me think, why the hell is Natalie Portman destroying a perfectly good pair of pointe shoes? After watching Galen Summer’s well observed documentary Pointe Shoes from his series of films for the New York City Ballet, you’ll understand that it wasn’t the physical manifestation of a fractured mind, but rather an essential ritual all ballerinas go through and part of an important relationship they have with their oft unseen ‘makers’ throughout their careers.
MarBelle has a strange compulsion to watch as many films as he can get his hands on and find jobs that give him a legitimate excuse to drill filmmakers about their work. Directors Notes is the latest incarnation of this disorder and so much cheaper than film school. Twitter: @MarBelle
