In his debut feature The Waves (Las Olas), director Alberto Morais explores the conversations we have with history and ourselves through his lead character Miguel’s (Carlos Alvarez) journey into his past. We spoke to Alberto at the London Film Festival about shooting a film which merges the present with memory.

The Waves (2011)

Miguel sets out on a journey that he has been anticipating for sixty years, from Valencia to a small town in the south of France called Argelès-sur-Mer, the last stop for thousands of refugees not so long ago. Journeying in his old car through an unknown present and a past put aside, he searches for a personal as well as historical reconciliation.

I respect the locations as characters because I think the locations explain a lot about the characters.
