Portal: No Escape

I’m far from a big gamer, but even I was drawn in by Valve’s teleportation puzzle Portal, so felt a thrill of anticipation when I saw the excited chatter around Dan Trachtenberg’s live action short Portal: No Escape.

Waking with a gasp in a familiarly bare, concrete wall room, Chell marks the repetitive days of exercising only broken up by a food tray slid into her cell via a low panel. That is until she discovers a panel which contains the portal gun, at which point sfx awesomeness breaks loose.

Trachtenberg has been moving towards features after building a following with his previous short for Black Box TV, More Than You Can Chew. Portal: No Escape premiered at last month’s Comic-Con to a rapturous response. After watching the film you’ll totally understand why.

MarBelle has a strange compulsion to watch as many films as he can get his hands on and find jobs that give him a legitimate excuse to drill filmmakers about their work. Directors Notes is the latest incarnation of this disorder and so much cheaper than film school. Twitter: @MarBelle
