Men Who Swim – Dylan Williams

Men Who Swim (2010)
Men Who Swim is a humorous and poignant look at a group of middle aged men who have found unlikely success as members of Sweden’s all male synchronised swimming team.

Author: MarBelle

MarBelle has a strange compulsion to watch as many films as he can get his hands on and find jobs that give him a legitimate excuse to drill filmmakers about their work. Directors Notes is the latest incarnation of this disorder and so much cheaper than film school. Twitter: @MarBelle

  4. I came across this film by chance, drawn in by the unusual title and subject (ever since Swedish Wallander stopped last Saturday I am craving anything filmic to do with Sweden).
This was a wonderful gem of a film with truthfulness and a disarming honesty.
I first watched in snatches knowing it would be great see in full later on and to finish off the week with my half German/half Swedish boyfriend during supper. It was the hit with him I knew it would be and I loved it even more.
Quick moving with a great build up of unmistakeable tension as there is the definite tension of the Will he/Won’t he as soon as the rest of the team are going to Italy.
I know several people abroad and those here who don’t watch their TV’s much would love this film too. Well done Dylan for making such a good film. If it is available I would love to buy a copy(ies).
If you have ever watched Dead Letters by Juliet Darling it had the same complete honesty and filming a part of human interaction that I do not think I have ever seen filmed before.

  5. Wow, I think your response is on a par with the beauty of the narrative – want a regular spot? ;)

I was impressed that Dylan managed to totally avoid a ‘look at me’ inserted doc director and instead had us worry equally about his struggle to hold things together on the home front and the team’s cohesion in the run up to the competition.

I’ll let him know he has an ego customer and pass on any DVD info. Thnaks for the comment.

  10. Well, just like the other posters I stumbled across the film and sat increasingly mesmerised with my wife by the whole experience.
The narration was subtle and self effacing which set a perfect tone for the rest of the events as they unfolded. I too would like to get hold of a copy that I can legitametly watch again. Is this possible?

Are the boys still swimming together?

    Well done, all the best,
    Sam

  16. don’t know about syncro swimming – don’t care. not an arthouse film guy – saw this by accident: Just watched the show…frickin’ awesome! No none of that namby-pamby feelin’ sorry for urself kinda’ crap…real dudes doing real stuff and making something real in their life!! I don’t feel sorry for any of the guys and in fact I love the fact they are not backing down and instead taking on the world!! If you are either (a) over 30, or (b) not 100% self absorbed 100% of the time then … this show will make you laugh and touch your heart

  17. This sweet, sparkly little film is a great delight and joy! There’s also a YouTube of the song the one swimmer composed… equally delightful.
