There are few things you can count on in this world; death, taxes, and the fact that if VLC media player can’t play a video file, it probably can’t be played.
I’m hoping that the rock solid trust I have in their playback software will extend to the imminent VideoLAN Movie Creator editing software release. As with VLC, VLMC is free and cross-platform (although not yet for Mac). You can see it in action in the video below.

I already use VLC to remux clips that other more picky encoders wouldn’t open otherwise.
